Projects and saving

How to start a project, how RTL++ saves it on this device and in your account, and how to rename, duplicate, export or move a project to Trash.

A project is a folder of HDL, test and constraint files plus a small manifest. Nothing else is hidden state: what you see in Files and in the Inspector is the whole project.

Starting a project

Blank project
A module and a testbench that passes. One click on New project, then Create.
Describe it
Write what the module should do; the assistant writes the module and its tests in a new project. The assistant needs an account; a description typed while signed out is kept through sign-in.
Import
A GitHub repository, a zip, a folder or loose files. See Import and export.

A new project has no board. Choose one when you need it, in the Board or Build view; until then it is a simulation-only project.

Where it is saved

  • Every change is saved on this device a moment after you make it, so closing the tab loses nothing.
  • Signed in, the change also reaches your account about a second and a half later. A change made offline, or before you signed in, is sent the next time you are online and signed in.
  • Opening a project picks whichever copy was edited last, on this device or in your account.

⌘S saves straight away and says where: to your account, or on this device when you are signed out or the account cannot be reached.

On a shared computer, copies made under one account are never listed or uploaded under another.

Your projects

Projects lists your projects from this device and your account, as a list or a grid, each with its target, the result of its last test run and when it was edited. Click a column to sort by it. Search finds a project by name, target, module or file. Shared with me lists projects others shared with you, with their owner and your access.

Open the More menu on a row, or right click it, to open it in a new tab, rename it (F2), duplicate it, export it as a zip, copy its link, or move it to Trash (Delete). Trash keeps a project for 30 days on this device, with Restore; Empty Trash removes everything in it for good.

Press ⌘K (Ctrl K on Windows and Linux) anywhere outside a project to search projects, chats and these docs, or paste a github.com link to import it.
